ECO-Green Design Styles

green styleThe eco/green movement in home design emphasizes an effort to minimize resource and energy use. Buildings and their interiors are constructed of sustainable materials which are innovative yet provide practical solutions. As people realize that our resources are limited, there will be more of an effort to reduce, recycle and re-use. This movement reflects our desire to move away from a materialistic society towards a more human, aware and hopeful future.

Some of the construction materials include products outside of the timber industry such as modular panels of insulated materials which also function as the walls. Passive solar is incorporated into new buildings. Non-petroleum based insulations such as foam made from soybeans or recycled clothing are used in existing buildings. Flooring and wood structures are repurposed from condemned buildings or made of timber from certified responsibly managed forests. Eco-timber, cork and bamboo are all sustainably harvested and durable with beautiful natural patinas. Low VOC paints and paints composed of materials such as linseed, citrus and soy oils are used for the walls. With natural wool carpets, the basic elements of the indoor space are created.

A celebration of nature is reflected in the colors and patterns of all-natural fabrics that have been manufactured without toxic chemicals. Floral, leaf and tree motifs are popular organic forms. Neutral grays and browns are mixed with bold, optimistic yellows, greens and shades of aquamarine.

This esthetic also affects the interior design through the use of unique or discarded objects for home furnishings. Materials include recycled glass countertops, concrete for floors and countertops, repurposed industrial fixtures and the use of wood pallets to name a few. Flea markets and salvage shops are used to find unique and vintage furnishings. Furniture manufacturers are also finding ways to utilize recycled materials in their products as well as making them totally recyclable at the end of the lifecycle.

As consumers look for ways to freshen up what they are currently using while supporting small businesses, one of a kind and handmade accessories will become more important in their decorating plans. The green movement in interior design is evolving but at it's core promotes saving money, energy and natural resources while providing a safe and healthy environment in the home.
